A COMPANY THAT KEEPS OTHERS AFLOAT

It’s always interesting to find stories of people who work in niche areas of the gear industry. So, Nick Deaville’s article in Gear Technology magazine about Marine Industrial Gears is worth a look.

Marine Industrial Gears (MIG) is always on call to repair transmissions ‘from river boats up the Mississippi to oil tankers on the high seas.

So how was MIG formed and how far will that call out extend?

It all started when founder, Chris Hill, saw the opportunity to service the shortage of parts and overcome the technology issues in servicing Marine gearboxes.

Founded in 2003, MiG’s workshop is on the Mississippi just west of New Orleans with a second repair facility in Paducah, Kentucky.

From here they can cover the greater part of the eastern United States, the Gulf of America/ Mexico and if the call is made, anywhere in the world if a surface ship needs repair. Just as well, because if a marine gearbox is out of service it can cost the owners a fortune.

They repair every make and model of gearbox and most machining can be done in-house. With a grinding capability over the last few years they add gear production as well as servicing to their menu.
