BAE SYSTEMS AUSTRALIA’S INITIATIVE TO HELP WOMEN BUILD A CAREER IN ENGINEERING

BAE Systems Australia is offering academic scholarships to women from regional Australia who want to study engineering for a career in the defence industry.

According to Manufacturers’ Monthly, and to align with this year’s UN International Women’s Day, the company will launch the William Hick’s Engineering Scholarship aimed at women in regional Australia. So what will the scholarship involve?

As well as support with academic study, BAE Systems will also provide students the access to work placements across the company. The aim is to accelerate their career path and to be ‘job ready’ at the completion of their studies.

Inspiration for the award came in 1988, when flight Lieutenant Robyn Williams and Officer Cadet, Deborah Hicks, pioneered the way forward as the first Australian women to become pilots in the Australian Air Force (RAAF).

Chief Executive Officer of BAE Systems Australia, Ben Hudson said, ‘We are passionate about championing gender equity across our business…….and will provide pathways for women from regional Australia to pursue rewarding careers in the high technology defence sector.’

BAE Systems Australia seek applications from August 2024, with the first four scholarship winners announced in January 2025 to coincide with university intakes. Read more here.
